I finally found the time to take a guided tour on Manhattan. This is something I've been wanting to do. But there is just never enough time. There are so many choices, most tours need to be booked in advance, some are expensive and, what really kills me, you have to be there on time.
When I found City Listen I knew I had found a product that was good enough for me. They create audio walking tours.
So I just downloaded the tour Walking Broadway to my iPhone and waited for the perfect moment to walk the tour.
It was so much more that I expected.
Yes, a knowledgeable guide who shared interesting facts and anecdotes. The tour also contains interviews with Broadway notables (starts, producers, writers).
Here I am strolling down Broadway with the company of Stephen Schwartz, the composer of Wicked, Godspell and Pippin, and Mary Rodgers, daughter of Richard Rodgers. Even one of the puppet characters from Avenue Q joined the tour.
My favorite was to hear Robert Lupone (who played the role of Zach) talk about how Cathrine Hepburn came backstage after the first A Chorus Line show at the Shubert Theater. The tour took me about 1,5 hours to walk:
- The walking directions were easy to follow with clear pauses
- I didn’t need a map
- I had the tour conveniently downloaded so I could use it whenever
- No worrying about booking, being on-time or bad weather
- Very affordable prices
- I’m sure I will walk the tour again next summer, after all I still have stored on my phone.
